The Pilates Foot
The foot alone has 26 bones and 57 joints. It rarely works in isolation from the rest of the body. Foot types vary between the flat foot and the arched foot. The biomechanical impact each type makes is felt throughout the entire leg and into the spinal system. Learn how the foot guides the actions of the sacroiliac joint, and then travels up the myofascial connections of the inner and outer units. Learn techniques that show Pilates is the perfect medium to address the many foot issues of our clients.

Addressing Balance and Fall Risks with Pilates
This experiential course is designed to relate the latest research and evidence-based practice findings to class programming for high-risk fallers. Following a brief review of the mechanisms for balance control and developing appropriate balance programming, we will use tools to decrease our own balance in order to bring about an increased awareness of what this population experiences during exercise and movement using Pilates equipment. We will then work together to identify how the programming and sequences assist with the integration of the balance systems during the class.

Old Dog - New Trick
This workshop will look at the evolution of the Pilates method over
the 90 plus years since its introduction, from the perspective of changes to the equipment which have deviated from the original designs. We will review springs, wheels, straps, ropes, and height, from the original designs to the many and varied modern modifications. Participants will learn: how the smallest adjustments and changes to the equipment can affect the original intention and performance of the exercises; how design changes add new functionality and how that compares with historical functionality; how changes affect the ‘feeling’ and result of the historical exercises. With an understanding of forces, angles and spring resistance, Pilates teachers will learn how to make intelligent choices with this knowledge for better program design and results.

Now that you have been teaching for a while are you undergoing some frustration in your effectiveness? Are you acutely aware of where the client needs to go, but are unable to springboard them beyond their current plateau? Stabilization is a fundamental key concept in Pilates, yet overemphasizing this can lead to rigid inhibition of movement, both physically and energetically. Experience how you can free mobility while sustaining stability through your own understanding of three key questions. Inspired by Irene Dowd’ s book, Taking Root to Fly, learn how you can anchor your stabilization points and through contrast, unleash a greater freedom in the mind, the breath, and the body.

The Magic Pilates Foot
One part of the client’s body that is notoriously underdeveloped, often abused, and elusive at best, is the foot. Joseph Pilates knew this and created specialized equipment and exercises to rapidly strengthen and integrate the feet with the rest of the body. There is phenomenal potential to correct this very underused yet complicated body part and by doing so transform the rest of the body simultaneously into a naturally and efficiently moving organic unity. How fabulous to address the foot alignment and receive psoas tone, a pain-free sacrum, neck tension release‚ and more! We will review the Corrector exercises as well as Towel and Standing Foot Exercises in all their richness and learn to track their effects through the entire body. Wouldn’t every client be better served to feel these full-body effects sooner and build upon them in the rest of their workout, exponentially making so much more of every exercise? Yes!

The Perfect Preparation: Skill Building for Full Expression in Your Pilates Practice
First Generation Pilates teacher Kathy Grant brought a great wealth of knowledge and creativity to the work she taught. In this course we will explore some of the skill building exercises from both Kathy’s vocabulary and mine, with an eye towards helping our clients gain more control, greater range, and improved alignment, with the ultimate goal of expressing themselves fully while practicing the traditional Pilates repertory.

Moving from the Organs
The teaching of Pilates has long relied on a musculoskeletal model, with more recent inclusion of the fascial system. But where do the organs fall into the work? Unlike yoga, which has long emphasized the significant role of - and benefit to - the viscera, Pilates has often overlooked these aspects. This workshop will identify the importance of the organs to movement, outline their relationship to surrounding anatomical structures and demonstrate how cueing them can facilitate immediate desired results in the body. We will explore why using visceral imagery and guiding mobility of the organs readily translates to Pilates and its guiding principles.

The most important aspect of the workshop will be the realization that to perform the exercise correctly and safely, all the Pilates principles must be used.
